Since 1999, the Hariri Foundation runs a model program designated for children, the Children’s Municipal Council (CMC). The program aims to develop a strong sense and understanding of democracy among students, enhancing & reinforcing their citizenship and advancing their responsibility and pride towards their community. Throughout CMC, children were empowered to voice their needs through representative councils and to improve their teambuilding skills and leadership abilities.
Earlier in 1999, the foundation partnered with the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education to launch the first CMC cohort on the World Children’s Day. The project targeted public and private schools across Lebanon in the six-grade class, engaging over 25,000 children in their local CMC election process. Each of the elected councils were then engaged with local municipalities and classified into 8 committees tackling environment, sports, tourism, artistic and cultural activities, advertising, information technology, children rights, and finance.
