In 2024, the Hariri Foundation, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Ministry of Environment, and within the framework of the SwitchMed II programme funded by the European Union (EU), launched the first national platform addressing the future of Lebanon’s Blue Economy.
Following a national assessment on the state of the Blue Economy in Lebanon, the partners organized the Lebanon Blue Economy Dialogue (LBED2024), convening nearly 100 stakeholders from various national and local sectors specific and relevant to the blue economy (BE).
LBED2024 culminated in critical commitments and actionable strategies, setting a dynamic course for Lebanon’s sustainable maritime future. The conference showcased innovative ideas and projects and solidified partnerships that span governmental bodies, private sector entities, and international organizations.
LBED2024 came with key outcomes and decisions to advance Lebanon’s Blue Economy. Strategic partnerships were established to enhance maritime infrastructure and promote sustainable practices along the coast. A comprehensive national policy framework was developed, focusing on sustainable fisheries, tourism, and port operations.
The conference also set the foundation for annual reviews to ensure the continued growth and sustainability of Lebanon’s Blue Economy. Today, the BE dialogue stands as a pivotal milestone in advancing Lebanon’s commitment to a thriving blue economy and sustainable future. The ongoing dialogue aims to facilitate knowledge exchange on best practices, innovative technologies, and effective policy frameworks, and strengthen networks and partnerships between public and private sectors.
